Washington is comprised of four villages: Marbledale, New Preston, Washington and Washington Depot. "The Depot," where Routes 47 and 109 converge, is the hub of the community and is where the town hall, a post office, stores, businesses and the Washington Art Association are located.

This scenic, hilly town is also graced by the beauty of Lake Waramaug, the Shepaug River, and the Bantam River. Large reservations of open space and hiking trails have been preserved by the Steep Rock Land Trust. Many artists, authors and musicians have been drawn to the natural beauty of the town for well over a century, contributing to its picturesque architecture and cultural life.

New Preston, just off Route 202, borders Lake Waramaug. A popular area of quaint boutiques and antiques shops, the village also boasts an assortment of country inns and restaurants, including the Hopkins Inn, Birches Inn, and The Boulders, which all enjoy commanding views of the lake. Near Washington Green, with its handsome Congregational church and stone library, The Mayflower Inn has an international reputation for fine dining and hospitality.

The rural, largely residential town operates under a Board of Selectmen/Board of Finance form of government. Washington is a member of Regional School District #12 (along with Bridgewater and Roxbury). The Washington Primary School educates students in grades K-5 before they move on to Shepaug Valley Middle/High School. There are also four private schools in town: Washington Montessori, The Gunnery, Rumsey Hall School and Devereux Glenholme.
